A Journey That Began in 1992

Ajay's story with the trade starts earlier than most people expect.

  • 1992, still a student, he joined the family's parental jewellery shop.

  • Grading stones, sourcing metals, and watching a design move from sketch to counter, that's how he learned it, hands-on and slow.

  • The gemologist qualification came later, technical training stacked on top of years already spent on the shop floor.

  • Three decades in, and that order, practical first, technical after, is still how sourcing and design get decided at Punjabi Saraf.

As Punjabi Saraf owner, most of the day-to-day still runs through Ajay.

    A Practical Approach to Jewellery Retail
    Not all of this comes through in a list, though. In a 2024 interview with Retail Jeweller India, Ajay Anand talked about Punjabi Saraf's interest-free jewellery offer for diamond and bridal buyers and broke the pricing down into "finance, convenience, and interest cost," splitting the offer by EMI duration, so customers paid fewer hidden charges depending on how long they took. Small detail, bigger pattern: decisions at Punjabi Saraf tend to start with what makes sense for the buyer, not the till.

    Continuing a Jewellery Legacy Since 1947

    None of this started with Ajay, of course. Punjabi Saraf was founded in Indore in 1947 by the late Shri Harichandra Anand, on an idea that's held up well: purity, quality, and a customer who leaves satisfied. Two stores later, and a lot more designs, the name on the shopfront hasn't changed. Neither has the standard behind it.
